Course - 4-Day Wilderness First Responder (WFR) recertification

Tuition - $545.00

Accom - Bunkstyle (limited) & Camping (included) or self-sourced accommodation (limited). NOTE: Toilets/showers are provided. Students need to provide their own bedding/pillow/towel/toiletries, etc.

Catering - Self-catering

Times -          ALL students are required to enrol at 7.45am Day 1 of the course.

Timetable -  8am to 5pm each day (except Day 1) Day 2 will have an evening session 6-8pm

Venue details: This venue alongside the teaching space has older style RUSTIC rooms with limited cooling. At this time of the year it is very hot and dry with potential fire hazards and there has been sitings of snakes. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED you bring gaiters and sunscreen along with the list below to this program. This is a beautiful site with access to the beach via a short drive into town.

Course details:

This program recertifies current WFR (80hr) trained participants to extend their qualification for a further 3 years. This four day scenario-based course is designed as review and practice of evacuation and decision making guidelines. It also provides wilderness first responders with current updates in the wilderness medicine field. CPR/AED refresher training is included on this course.

This course is designed specifically to refresh your skills and provide you with the tools to make critical first aid and evacuation decisions in remote locations. Half of your time will be spent completing practical skills, case studies and scenarios designed to challenge your decision making abilities.

 

PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS PRE COURSE WORK IN THE FORM A BOOKLET THAT WILL NEED TO BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE COURSE START. THIS BOOKLET TAKES APPROXIMATELY 5 HOURS.

Assessment:

Students will undergo:

  • 75 question multiple choice LWAFA written test
  • CPR/AED practical test
  • WFR practical test

Units of competancy acheived upon successful completion of all assessment tasks:

The units listed below are in completion of the new SISSS00108 - Wilderness First Aid Skill Set and endorsed by Outdoor Council of Australia (OCA) and National Outdoor Leader Registration Scheme (NOLRS):

HLTAID001 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

HLTAID003 - Provide first aid

HLTAID006 - Provide advanced first aid

SISXOHS101A - Participate in workplace health and safety

SISOOPS305A -  Provide first aid in a remote location

SISXEMR001 - Respond to emergency situations

SISXEMR002 - Coordinate emergency responses

Upon successful completion of all assessment tasks, you will be issued with an (80hr) WFAA Wilderness First Responder certification card valid for three years. You will also be issued with a CPR/AED certification card valid for one year.

 

-   WFAA SUPPLIES A LIMITED AMOUNT OF GEAR FOR INSTRUCTIONAL PURPOSES ONLY!

To ensure ALL students get the most out of their learning participants should bring ALL their own personal equipment (not limited to the list below) to gain a lot stronger understanding and familiarity with how to respond in an emergency situation.

What to Bring (minimum)

  • Warm/appropriate clothing to be outside. Please DO NOT wear your best outdoor clothing as you will be outside on the ground and stage makeup will be used which can stain if no washed.
  • Sleeping bag
  • Foam mat, Thermorest, insulation
  • Wet weather gear
  • Small tarp, tent flye, hootchi, (some sort of shelter protection)
  • Sun protection – 30+SPF/Zinc
  • Water bottle
  • Backpack
  • Pen, paper
  • Watch with second hand
  • 2 x spare jumpers and t-shirts for padding for splints
  • Walking poles, paddles - gear you would normally have with you outdoors that you can use to improvise splints
  • If the course has an accommodation option, please bring sleeping bag/linen, pillow and towel, etc.

 

To maximise participant learning ensure you wear OLD clothing, it may be a good idea to source clothing from a second hand clothing or ‘Opportunity Shop’ beforehand.Throughout the course we use stage makeup and it states that it does not stain clothing/material this may not always be the case.

 

  • If you have chosen to self cater, please bring a packed lunch and snacks, as breaks are short and most venues do not have food available close by.
